Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 NLT When things are going well, we tend to drift into relying on our old habits, our own wisdom and the help of others to get us through. It seems we can forget we need to rely and trust God in the ordinary, not just the extraordinary moments of our lives.
When a crisis breaks over our lives, an accident steals our peace, or a sudden loss interrupts our routine, we are brought back to the reality that we are hopeless without God, his favor and protection in our lives. It becomes easy, even automatic for us, as believers, to cry out to God in those moments. “Lord, help me! Save my family. Heal my friend. Lead me to another job.” And God who is merciful, kind and full of compassion answers us. We recognize he is working for us. He reassures us of his care and presence and restores our peace of mind and heart. I wonder, though, if we forfeit the power, protection and potential for greater things when we ignore our need for God every day? When we consciously acknowledge our need for God, we tend to listen to him and make every effort to align with his desires and plans. Could it be that when we call our spirits to awaken in the morning and consciously align with the Holy Spirit working in us and through us, we plug into greater spiritual possibilities for the day? Are you satisfied with your level of dependence upon God? Listen to Galatians 5:25 “Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.” Let’s surrender our control and fall into the arms of our loving Savior and let the Holy Spirit guide and empower us every day, not just in times of crisis, but especially in the mundane, ordinary routines of our lives. Let us practice being conscious of God’s presence in the ordinary drudgery of our days. Let us learn to rest in the Lord and grow in our trust and awareness of who he is. Could it be that our awareness that he is with us in every moment would transform the ordinary into something extraordinary and supernatural? I challenge you to try it, and let me know! Pray with me: “Father God, I believe that, as Psalm 139 says, your Spirit is always with me, no matter how I feel or where I go. Holy Spirit, teach me to grow in my spiritual awareness. Awaken my human spirit each morning and align me with your plans and purposes. Thank you, that when I do, you will guide me into greater possibilities and transform my ordinary days into something extraordinary for the Father’s glory. Amen.” Dear friend, be blessed as you surrender control and learn to trust and rest in the Lord. May you be overwhelmed with his love and peace and surprised by his joy, as you learn to experience his presence and rely on his wisdom and power in the ordinary moments. Amen.
