Claiming Our Peace

I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me.
Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows.
But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
 John 16:33 NLT

The night of his betrayal, facing his own painful torture and death, Jesus was clearly concerned about his beloved disciples who did not understand what would take place.  They could not foresee that, what looked like his biggest defeat, would lead to his, and our, final victory. 

Did they hear his promise of the gift of peace that he offered in John 14:27?  He wanted them to remember his promise, so he expands on it in John 16:33 above.  The world cannot offer peace like his, because Christ’s peace does not depend on what appears to be true in the physical realm, but only on what has already been accomplished for us in the spiritual realm, his finished work on the Cross.

You, like me, may become discouraged when we hear of wars, hurricanes, fires, earthquakes, famine, economic hardship, and political craziness.  Then add to that we our own personal trials and tragedies.  Is God watching? Will we ever have peace?

In the verse above, Jesus wanted his followers to remember that they would have peace, in spite of what appeared to be happening. He would continue to love and care for them.  It would be alright. 

Jesus knew we, too, would have many trials and sorrows in this world. To receive the peace that endures, no matter the circumstances, we, too, must hear and believe what Jesus says.  What had Jesus told his disciples that would enable them to receive peace in him?

First, Jesus revealed our loving Father who created us, knows us and loves us so much that he would sacrifice his only Son so our sin could be forgiven, saving us from eternal punishment.  

Jesus wants us to know who we are in Christ so we can stand and resist the evil one.  We are created to be valued, secure, loved and cherished, and living now and forever in Jesus’ presence.

Believers in Jesus will forever be one with God. We will never be alone and helpless, but have the comfort, strength and guidance of the Holy Spirit. 

Jesus has gone to prepare a place for us and will return to take us with him. One day we will share in his glory and rule with him.  So, let’s not focus on our temporary problems, rather fix our gaze on what is eternal and receive peace in Christ.

Dear friends, be blessed to receive the peace that endures.  Be blessed as you believe that peace is yours because Jesus won it for you on the Cross.  The present has its trials and sorrows, but be blessed to focus on the Overcomer and the future that is secure for you in Christ.  Look around.  God is with you wherever you look.  He will never leave you, nor abandon you. Breathe in the peace! Amen.
